Sustainability in My Work: The Small Steps That Matter

We hear a lot these days about the climate crisis, about the tipping point we’re at and how each of us can help make a difference. It’s a lot to take in, but it got me thinking: what can I do, through my work as a celebrant, to tread more lightly?

This question has sparked a gradual shift in how I run my business. I’m certainly not perfect and I don’t have all the answers, but I’m committed to making changes where I can and encouraging others to do the same.

Practical Changes I’m Making

Here are some of the actions I’ve already taken, or am in the process of taking, to make my business more sustainable:

  • Minimising paper use - I’ve stopped automatically printing scripts as keepsakes for couples and families. Instead, I now send digital versions, which are easier to store, share and, let’s be honest, don’t get lost in a drawer!

  • Going digital myself (soon) - From 2026, I plan to stop using paper scripts altogether during ceremonies and switch to reading from a tablet. This is a big change for me as I've always been a paper-and-pen kind of person (never even touched a Kindle!). But I know it's the right step and I'm preparing myself for the switch.

  • Sustainable gifting - Rather than giving physical gifts, I now offer eco-conscious options such as tree-planting certificates, sent digitally. It’s symbolic, thoughtful and much kinder to the planet.

  • Reducing unnecessary travel - I'm becoming more mindful of the journeys I make and I’m exploring offsetting schemes that allow me to give back to environmental projects for every 100 miles I drive for work.

  • Building a network of ethical suppliers - I’m currently developing a list of local, environmentally aware businesses - florists, photographers, venues - so I can recommend partners who share the same values.

  • Encouraging eco-friendly choices - I guide my families and couples to consider greener options when planning their ceremonies, whether that’s seasonal flowers, reusable décor or thoughtful transport choices.

This is all a work in progress. I have a long way to go and plenty to learn, but I’m taking it seriously and I’m taking it step by step.

Living My Values Through My Work

One of the most meaningful ways these values show up in my work is through my involvement with a green burial ground. I’ve had the privilege of officiating celebrations of life and ash interments in this peaceful, natural setting, where the environmental ethos mirrors my own.

It's About Intention, Not Perfection

For me, this isn’t about being perfectly eco-friendly. It’s about intention, making thoughtful choices and encouraging others to do the same. Whether you’re planning a wedding, a naming ceremony or a farewell for a loved one, there are always little ways we can show respect for the planet in the process.
